TRANSMISSION LOG 0048
ORIGIN: Tamsin Ridge Deep Archive / Bell Array
TARGET: LANTERN (adjacent fold, designation L-1)
LOCAL DATE: 2193.02.09 / 03:12
SIGNAL INTEGRITY: 97.2%
ENCODING: DEAD TEXT v4 (archival flat)
I sat down at 03:12 to send.
The plates are amber. They'll stay amber until I take my hand off the key, and then they won't again.
Marek is in the chair by the stove with his back to me, facing the east doors. The wax is in. At about three he got up and went to the long table, and I heard the pen, not for long. He brought the blank card over and laid it face down on the box by the key without a word. Then he slid me another one, face up.
I HAVE LEFT ENOUGH ROOMS.
Then he went back to the chair. He hasn't turned around since.
The twenty-nine are at the lower gate in the dark, with their ears stopped. Teo's gloves are by the key, one on the other, with his note. June's radio is dark, and the lead's still cut. The ledger is closed. In the vault there's a strip I haven't read.
The lamp is on. It means I can see the key.
Listener, I'm going to tell you a few things, and then I'm going to open the box, and then I'm going to stop.
I'm her.
I was careful. I'm not proud of it.
Every log I sent you was a warning. I meant each one. And a warning is a door. You can't warn anyone of anything without opening one, and I held it open from this side with both hands and called it care. I checked the bolts. I kept the ledger. I wrote you what not to do, over and over, from the same desk.
My logs did this.
The Director wrote it in a margin once, and I'll give it to you exactly, once more, and then I'm finished with it:
"A channel held from both sides cannot be shut from one, unless one side stops listening entirely."
I'm the side.
I'm going to stop listening entirely. To the hum, and the plates, and the hairpin, and June. And to us.
Item: you. Condition: good. Not retained.
I'm opening the box now. I've never read these at this desk. I'm typing each one as I lift it.
THE QUIET ACCORD / thirty cards, one line each, as written
MEND SOMETHING THAT IS ALMOST WORN THROUGH. SPLIT KINDLING UNTIL YOUR ARMS ARE TIRED. PLANT SOMETHING YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR FOR. WALK TO THE NEXT FARM AND BACK BEFORE DARK. KNEAD BREAD. TEN MINUTES. DO NOT STOP AT EIGHT. LEARN THE NAMES OF THE BIRDS ON YOUR ROAD. SHARPEN EVERY BLADE IN THE HOUSE. TEACH A CHILD TO TIE A KNOT THAT HOLDS. KEEP A FIRE IN FOR ONE WHOLE WINTER. CARRY WATER FOR SOMEONE OLDER THAN YOU. PUT A STONE BACK ON THE WALL WHERE IT FELL. WRITE YOUR TALLY IN THE DIRT AND RAKE IT OUT AT NIGHT. DIG THE DRAIN BEFORE IT FLOODS, NOT AFTER. SHELL BEANS WITH SOMEONE. SAY NOTHING. BRUSH THE ANIMAL BEFORE YOU FEED IT. CARVE A SPOON. A BAD ONE IS STILL A SPOON. PATCH THE ROOF BEFORE THE THAW. COUNT STITCHES, NOT DAYS. SWEEP THE STEP EVERY MORNING EVEN IF NO ONE COMES. HOLD THE LADDER FOR WHOEVER IS ON THE ROOF. SALT THE FISH. TURN IT. SALT IT AGAIN. PICK STONES OUT OF THE FIELD. THERE ARE ALWAYS MORE. BURY WHAT YOU NEED TO. MARK THE PLACE WITH WOOD. PLAIT ROPE FROM WHAT THE FIELD GIVES YOU. SHOW YOUR NEIGHBOR WHERE YOU KEEP THE SPARE KEY. TAKE THE LONG WAY TO THE WELL. STACK WOOD BARK UP SO IT SHEDS RAIN. COOK FOR MORE PEOPLE THAN YOU HAVE. SOMEONE WILL COME. WHEN YOUR HANDS WANT SOMETHING, GIVE THEM BREAD TO BREAK. TURN IT OFF YOURSELF. DO NOT LEAVE IT FOR SOMEONE ELSE.
That's thirty. The last one was face down until just now.
The rest is the frame, and it's mine. These are sentences too. This is the last time they'll cost us anything.
Don't read this aloud.
Don't copy it out.
If anything reaches you after this in my hand, it isn't me. Don't finish it.
If you find a light across the valley, don't give it a name. June used to say they make their own light.
To one of you: leave it at the top.
Whoever keeps time on the hairpin can keep it without me.
In the morning the plates come down and go to the gate. The Accord go down the mountain, as they said in October they would.
I'm staying. Someone has to keep the vaults cold, and I know where everything is. There are seeds in the stores I've never had a reason to plant. I'll make my own coffee.
That's tomorrow. I've planned it, and I mean to have it.
My hand's on the key. The desk's cool under the other one. I'm not going to the slot. I'm not looking for orange.
I'm opening my hand.
I'm going to stop.
