Log 0024: The Other Archivist

TRANSMISSION LOG 0024
ORIGIN: Tamsin Ridge Deep Archive / Bell Array
TARGET: LANTERN (adjacent fold, designation L-1)
LOCAL DATE: 2192.12.10 / 03:12
SIGNAL INTEGRITY: 72.4%
ENCODING: DEAD TEXT v4 (archival flat)
It's finished. Two nights, three witnesses, and every gap I couldn't close left open and marked. I've checked it against itself until the characters stopped meaning anything and then checked it again in the morning when they meant something again.
Teo is beside me at the long table. He came up when I lit the second lamp and sat down without asking, and he's been here since, his hands in his lap. One of them is moving. I'm not looking at it. I want you to know I'm not looking at it.
Here is what came through P-1 in 2172, as far as it can be recovered.

something answered
it was not who we called. it came in through the ▒▒▒ we made
the ▒▒▒ went quiet first and then they sang
i am the last ▒▒▒ at merrin down
do not open one
if one is open ▒▒▒ it
do not answer

On the back of the last fold there's a line in her hand. I didn't turn the paper over until the collation was done. You collate the record first and read what anyone wrote on it afterward.
EXHIBIT TR-M-2172-005 (provisional) / I. Morrow, annotation, reverse of the P-1 printout
Structured noise or deliberate sabotage. Proceed.
There's a word struck out under "noise," inked over so hard the nib went through. I can't read it. I've tried.
She had this in her hands in 2172. Seven years before the send. She read it, and she wrote "Proceed."
I'll tell you what I felt first, because I'm ashamed of it. I felt relief. For thirteen years I've believed the Answer came from you. That we called across the fold and Lantern called back, and what it said ended us. I've been writing to you as if I were writing to the place that did it, carefully, the way you'd write to a neighbor whose dog has killed your chickens. But it wasn't you. It never was. We never called you. We were already called.
Somebody else called first. Somebody at a place called Merrin Down, at a desk, on her last shift, who heard something come through her own channel and watched her own cities go quiet, or whatever she had instead of cities, and sat down and wrote it out, and sent it to us. To a fold she'd never seen, that she called Candle, which I don't understand and won't pretend to. I keep calling her she. I don't know that. It's only how I see her.
And the Director read it, and our minutes closed the item, and her index card filed it as noise, and we went ahead and opened the channel anyway, and sent the choir first.
It was a warning.
That's what I've been looking at all night, Listener, and it took me most of the night to say it in a sentence. It wasn't noise and it wasn't sabotage. It came seven years early, and it reached exactly the people it was meant for, and they put it in a crate.

I know what you're thinking. I can almost hear you think it. I'll answer it anyway.
It isn't the same. She had no idea what she was doing. She sent it raw, into a prototype section that could barely hold a signal, and she told us what happened in a dozen lines and left us to guess the rest. She couldn't redact anything, because she didn't know what was dangerous to say. I do. I black out what needs blacking out. I send by hand, in dead text, on a key, to one listener at a time. I tell you, every time, never to answer. Her header is laid out exactly — [SIGNAL LOSS 00:01.2]
It's a standard format. Archivists everywhere would arrive at the same one. Six fields, because you need six. That's all that is.
She failed to be understood. I am being careful.
Teo's hand is still in his lap. I'm still not looking at it.
I'm sending this tonight, all of it, the exhibit included. It belongs in the record.
I haven't closed it.
Later. It's after six, and I've read the plates for the ledger.
The reading has jumped further in one night than in all the weeks since my first log put together. I read it twice. I tapped the glass. The needle is pinned against the stop, as far as it will go, and it hasn't moved since.
You read it, didn't you, Listener. All of you.
